Dwight Stones

2010 CALIFORNIA SPORTS HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

In the 70's, Sports Illustrated's premier writer, Frank Deford, dubbed him, "The Mouth That Soars", because he both flew over the high bar in competition, and spoke articulately about a variety of issues. Dwight Stones has continued his outspoken nature with a career in television broadcasting, sharing his expertise in the world of athletic competition, while expanding into the arena of business.

His athletic credentials are impressive. Ten times he set the World Record in the High Jump. He won Bronze medals in both the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games. In 1984, at the age of 30, he made his unprecedented third Olympic team when he set his 13th American Record to win the Olympic Trials.

No American has dominated the event like Dwight Stones. During his 16 year career, he won an incredible 19 National Championship titles. He was twice voted World Indoor Athlete of the Year, by Track & Field News, and remains history's All-Time #1 Ranked American High Jumper. In 1998, the highest honor in the sport was bestowed upon Dwight when he was inducted into the United States Track & Field Hall of Fame.

Dwight was the first athlete to both announce and compete in the same Olympic Games when he worked for ABC’s broadcast in 1984. Since then he has concentrated his efforts on a career in television. He has been a color analyst, host and play by play announcer for NBC, ABC and CBS, and ESPN, as well as numerous local and national cable outlets, covering sporting events around the world. Dwight has been on broadcast teams for the Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta, Sydney, and Athens. He conducted on air interviews for the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City and most recently in Torino.

In addition, Dwight was an integral part of NBC's 1999 World Track and Field Championships coverage from Seville, Spain that won an Emmy for "Best Live Event Turnaround."

Over the past ten years, Dwight has been diversifying his television assignments to concentrate more effort on becoming a host/play by play announcer. Aside from his work in track & field, he has done play by play on: tennis, baseball, badminton, gymnastics, volleyball, boxing, wrestling, and marathons. In 2000, Dwight hosted the "web" coverage of the track and field portion of the Paralympic Games from Sydney, further establishing himself as one of the pioneers in this new entertainment and information technology. In 1999 Dwight was honored to play a role in NBC’s Emmy winning broadcast for “Best Live Event Turnaround” of the Track and Field World Championships.

In 1980 he was invited to speak on the “Olympic Boycott” to audiences throughout America. He realized his ability to inspire people to reach out for greater results in their own personal and professional lives. Dwight has since worked as a motivational speaker, keynote speaker, lecturer, and clinician.

As a successful athlete, motivator and businessman, Dwight has founded Dwight Stones Sports which endeavors to work together with its clients on the implementation of customized sports training programs. Due to the status he achieved as an athlete, Dwight maintains close ties to the “superstars” of sport. He specializes in on-line interactive training programs and personal coaching/training programs which enables not only him but a select group of elite coaches to share their “secrets of success” with others.

2006, Dwight launched his signature "Dwight Stones Sports" line of athletic gear and Elite Athlete Program in order to expand his reach into the fast-growing track & field participation market.

Recently, Dwight was elected as one of the three Vice-Presidents of the prestigious U.S. Olympians Association. Through his service he will be able to pass along much of his knowledge and experience learned as a result of 30 years in the media which will hopefully result in a higher profile for some of America's "diamond in the rough" athletes in Olympic sports.

With the Olympic Games in Beijing fast approaching, expect to see Dwight out front doing whatever it takes to help further develop America's next generation of great athletes.
